We had a chance to play the multiplayer mode for the latest installment in the God of War franchise. I was very impressed. Usually developers hash out some half-ass multiplayer but you could tell they took their time. The multiplayer has been in the works for about two and a half years, according to one of the Q and A testers.
As I sat down to play, one of the developers walked me through the tutorial. The multiplayer mode is a 4-versus-4 domination. The two playable factions are the Spartans and Trojans. The playable characters are iconic heroes of old such as Odysseus and Achilles. The goal is earn 5000 points to win the game for your team. You can earn points by defeating enemies, opening treasure chest, and most importantly capturing seals for your team.
When your point meter reaches 4000 a spear is dropped into the game. Once dropped, players rush to retrieve the weapon. This automatically grants you 1000 points for Gryffindor! I’m sorry I just can’t help but be reminded of the golden snitch. This pretty much ends the game with a final cinematic scene of your team penetrating the eye of a cyclops.
I was glad to notice that the multiplayer stayed true to the God of War ambiance, very bloody and cinematic. It was pretty awesome to see how cinematic a multiplayer game could be. This game has me pumped for the full release of God of War: Ascension which should be out sometime in March 2013. What do you think about the new direction for the franchise? Are you excited to unleash the wrath of the Gods on your friends?
