Will Gaikai Open an Ocean of Cloud Gaming for Sony?

Danny Hauger July 5, 2012 Sony No Comments

Aliso Viejo tech company Gaikai just reached a huge level up. This Week the company announced its sale to entertainment powerhouse Sony for $380 million. Could your video game console be the next box to disappear into the cloud?
Gaikai now has the capital to invest in infrastructure to bolster its research and development. The new controlling partner also has clear plans on creating a new method of gaming interactivity through the advent of wireless media. Partnering with investors like Capital, Rustic Canyon Partners, New Enterprise Associates, Qualcomm Ventures, and Intel Capital also provide creative opportunities.
The future may not be cryptic at all. Gaikai’s vision clearly plans a world in “When video games can be accessed as easily as movies and music, we believe they will become the #1 form of entertainment in the world.”
Gaikai(pronounced “guy-kai”) is a Japanese word that loosely translates to “Open Ocean”. Surely the potential for subsidized portals for game renting or ownership through cloud computing could provide a huge marketplace. Netflix and similar subscription services have proven such a receptive community is a possibility.
Microsoft rumors swirl about a similar incorporation through acquiring OnLive. These rumors are yet to be fulfilled. What is likely is that Gaikai’s presence might come to your home as soon as the next generation of Playstation in 3-5 years. Hardware manufacturers will be watching very closely to see where the next generation of loading gathers its content from.
